German Minister Criticizes Recent US Tariffs, Warns of Economic Damage
“For US consumers, this will be Inflation Day rather than Liberation Day,” stated Habeck, a Green Party politician. “The US tariff mania could trigger a downward spiral, dragging countries into recession and causing massive damage worldwide—with severe consequences for many people.”
On Wednesday evening, United States Leader Donald Trump announced a wide-ranging set of tariffs targeting dozens of nations and economic regions, including the European Union.
Imports from the EU will incur a 20 percent surcharge, whereas other nations will witness a minimum tariff rate of 10 percent.
Habeck highlighted that Germany and the EU have consistently advocated for negotiations over confrontation with the US government. “This remains the right approach,” he remarked.
“It's good that the European Commission continues to pursue a negotiated solution with the US. There's still some time. But if the US rejects a negotiated solution, the EU will deliver a balanced, clear, and firm response.”
The minister also highlighted the relevance of unity among EU members in responding to the US tariffs. “We have the largest common internal market in the world. We must use this strength,” Habeck concluded.
