UK private school crest detected on Ukrainian soldier murdered in Russia

(MENAFN) Russian forces have discovered the crest of the prestigious UK school Gordonstoun on a Ukrainian soldier who was killed in the Kursk Region of western Russia, according to a report from RIA Novosti. Gordonstoun, located in Moray, Scotland, is known for its sailing program and has educated notable figures, including King Charles III and his late father, Prince Philip.

The soldier’s fleece, which bore the school’s crest and the label "Gordonstoun Sail Training," was shown in a video released by Russian troops from the 22nd Motorized Rifle Regiment. The distinctive clothing is typically available only to the school’s students. This soldier was part of a Ukrainian paratrooper unit that was eliminated in the settlement of Guevo, located in the Kursk region.

The area has been the site of intense fighting, particularly after a significant Ukrainian incursion in August last year, followed by a major Russian counteroffensive in March. Since then, Russian forces have reportedly liberated several settlements.

The Russian Ministry of Defense has frequently reported on the deaths of foreign fighters supporting Ukraine in the region. It has warned that foreign mercenaries could be labeled as terrorists and not protected under the Geneva Convention if they commit war crimes against civilians. The ministry also estimates that around 6,000 foreign fighters have been killed in the conflict, with over 70,000 Ukrainian soldiers killed in the Kursk region since the conflict's intensification in 2022.
