UNRWA says Gaza medical centers 'constantly under attack' amid Israeli onslaughts
In a statement released for World Health Day, UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini highlighted the toll on health workers, noting that many have been killed or injured in the ongoing conflict. “Health centres are constantly under attack. Basic medical & health supplies are running out,” he stated.
He added, “Medical staff are exhausted after having tirelessly dedicated their lives to the community & the wounded. They constantly have to make tough decisions about which lives to save."
Lazzarini also emphasized the psychological impact of the violence, saying, “Two million people are scarred for life with trauma & shock, battling with the invisible wounds of mental health.”
The Israeli military resumed its aggressive operations in Gaza on March 18, resulting in approximately 1,400 fatalities and at least 3,400 injuries, effectively ending a ceasefire and prisoner swap deal established in January.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged last week to intensify military operations in Gaza, aligning with US President Donald Trump's strategy aimed at displacing Palestinians from the area.
Since the beginning of October 2023, over 50,700 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in the continuing Israeli assault on Gaza.
