EU retaliates against US steel tariffs with 25 percent duties on select goods
(MENAFN) The European Union has proposed imposing a 25% tariff on a range of selected U.S. products as a countermeasure to President Donald Trump's recent decision to levy duties on European steel and aluminum. The proposal was outlined in an internal document shared with EU member states, according to reports from Reuters and Bloomberg on Monday.
The initial phase of these retaliatory tariffs is slated to take effect on May 16, as reported.
The targeted U.S. goods include diverse items such as diamonds, eggs, dental floss, sausages, as well as poultry. Notably, bourbon, wine, and dairy products, which were previously under consideration, have been excluded from the final list, according to reports.
On Monday, Maros Sefcovic, the European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, revealed that a list of countermeasures will be shared with EU member states shortly. The initial vote on these measures is set for April 9, with their implementation expected to begin on April 15.
Commissioner Sefcovic highlighted the European Union's commitment to a negotiated solution, while also indicating that the bloc is prepared to utilize "every tool" available to safeguard itself against the effects of U.S. tariffs if diplomatic negotiations do not succeed.
"We are prepared to use every tool in our trade defense arsenal to protect the EU single market, EU producers, and EU consumers," he remarked.
