The International Criminal Court (ICC) has lost its legitimacy by aligning itself with the political interests of powerful nations, claims international relations expert Ali Hammoud. In an interview on Thursday, Hammoud, a professor at the Center for Diplomatic and Strategic Studies (CEDS) in Paris, argued that the ICC applies double standards, prosecuting individuals from weaker nations in Asia and Africa while failing to address crimes committed by leaders of more powerful countries.

Hammoud stressed that for the ICC to regain credibility, it must prove that no one, regardless of their nationality or political connections, is above the law. His comments come amid ongoing controversy surrounding the ICC’s decision to issue an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in November, charging him with war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the conflict in Gaza. Despite this, Israel has continued its military actions in Gaza, and Netanyahu's government enjoys strong support from the European Union, as evidenced by a visit to Israel by EU diplomat Kaja Kallas earlier this week.
