Trump signals further tariff hikes on China
In a social media post, Trump stated, "Yesterday, China issued Retaliatory Tariffs of 34%, on top of their already record setting Tariffs, Non-Monetary Tariffs, Illegal Subsidization of companies, and massive long term Currency Manipulation, despite my warning that any country that Retaliates against the U.S. by issuing additional Tariffs, above and beyond their already existing long term Tariff abuse of our Nation, will be immediately met with new and substantially higher Tariffs, over and above those initially set."
Trump indicated that if China does not retract its 34% tariff increase by today, April 8th, the additional 50% tariffs would be imposed, taking effect on Wednesday. He further declared, "Additionally, all talks with China concerning their requested meetings with us will be terminated! Negotiations with other countries, which have also requested meetings, will begin taking place immediately."
This latest move follows Trump's announcement last Wednesday of widespread reciprocal tariffs ranging from 10% to 50% on over 180 nations, with China initially facing a 34% levy. In response, China implemented a 34% tariff on all imports from the US, a retaliatory measure against the initial US tariffs. The escalating trade tensions raise concerns about the potential impact on the global economy.
