Trump Considers Temporary Tariff Pause
The president mentioned that discussions with key figures in his administration helped bring the idea to fruition.
“I've been thinking about it. I've been dealing with Scott, with Howard, with some other people that are very professional. And I think it probably came together early this morning, fairly early this morning. Just wrote it up,” Trump said, referring to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
Trump emphasized that the proposal was heartfelt and thoughtfully composed. “It was written from the heart, and I think it was well-written too, but it was written from the heart. It was written as something that I think was very positive for the world and for us, and we don't want to hurt countries that don't need to be hurt, and they all want to negotiate,” he added, highlighting the administration’s intent to encourage dialogue rather than escalate tensions.
Earlier that day, the president had raised tariffs on goods from China to 125 percent. However, this move was accompanied by a concession: over 75 countries were granted a 90-day postponement from a looming deadline that would have seen them face tariffs surpassing the established 10 percent threshold, in some instances substantially higher.
On his Truth Social account, Trump explained that the decision was prompted by outreach from these nations, who expressed a willingness “to negotiate a solution to the subjects being discussed relative to Trade, Trade Barriers, Tariffs, Currency Manipulation, and Non Monetary Tariffs.”
He also pointed out that these countries had not retaliated “in any way, shape, or form against the United States,” reinforcing his rationale for the temporary relief.
