Opposition leader of South Korea enters presidential race, pledges economic growth

(MENAFN) On Thursday, Lee Jae-myung, the leader of the South Korean opposition, declared his candidacy for the upcoming presidential election, pledging to tackle economic disparities and stimulate growth.

Lee resigned from his position as chairman of the Democratic Party (DP) on Wednesday to formally launch his presidential campaign, with elections set for June 3. This electoral process was initiated following the ousting of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who briefly imposed martial law in December 2024.

In a video announcement released today, Lee, who currently leads in opinion polls, emphasized his commitment to addressing economic polarization, which he identified as a major contributor to social unrest that intensified after Yoon's martial law declaration. Positioning himself as a pragmatist, Lee expressed his goal of promoting significant government investments in technology and talent development to rejuvenate the economy.

Previously, Lee served as chairman of the DP after narrowly losing the 2022 presidential election to Yoon. He later guided his party to a significant victory in the parliamentary elections in April of the previous year.

In related news, Han Dong-hoon, the former head of the conservative People Power Party (PPP), has also announced his intention to run for president, vowing to defeat Lee. Han, a former prosecutor and a close ally of Yoon, opposed the martial law declaration immediately after it was announced in December, leading a faction of PPP lawmakers in voting against the decree in the National Assembly.
