Trump increases China tariff to 125 percent

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has escalated the trade conflict with China by raising tariffs on Chinese goods to 125%, following a retaliatory move from Beijing earlier in the day. In a statement on his Truth Social platform, Trump criticized China for its actions in global markets and declared the tariff hike as an immediate response to China’s disrespectful behavior toward the global economy. He expressed that such practices, which harm the US and other nations, are no longer acceptable.

This escalation follows a series of tariff increases initiated by Trump, including a 20% tariff imposed in March and a subsequent 34% hike last week, to which China retaliated. In response to the broader trade war, Trump also introduced a 90-day pause with a 10% reduced tariff for other nations, acknowledging that over 75 countries have expressed interest in discussing trade issues without retaliation, unlike China. Trump highlighted that these countries had cooperated with his stance on trade, unlike Beijing’s actions.
