Trump declares he simply ‘likes’ Musk

(MENAFN) President Donald Trump offered glowing praise for Elon Musk during a Cabinet meeting on Thursday, saying he simply likes the billionaire entrepreneur and has no other reason for keeping him in a key advisory role. Musk currently heads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a Trump administration task force focused on reducing federal waste.

“Elon’s done a fantastic job,” Trump said. “I don’t need Elon for anything – I just happen to like him.” He credited Musk and his team with identifying billions in potential government savings and emphasized that their work has been exceptional.

To show his support, Trump shared that he even bought a Tesla—despite not needing one—so his office staff could use it. “They asked if I got a deal. I said no, I paid full price,” Trump joked.

In response, Musk praised Trump and his Cabinet for their leadership, stating that DOGE is on track to save $150 billion in the 2026 fiscal year by rooting out fraud and inefficiency. “Some of it is so ridiculous – like people getting unemployment benefits who haven’t even been born yet,” Musk remarked.

Musk’s prominent role in the administration has sparked criticism, particularly from Democratic lawmakers who argue his involvement poses ethical concerns and reflects political favoritism. Some have called for his removal, citing his controversial public behavior and the potential for conflicts of interest.

Despite this, the White House has backed Musk, with Trump making it clear he wants the DOGE team to remain active even after the current initiative ends. He praised their tech-driven strategies and fresh thinking.

“Your people are incredible – smart, sharp,” Trump told Musk. “We’d love to keep them around for the long haul.”
