China slams U.S. 'reciprocal tariffs' as 'wrong practice', calls for cancellation

(MENAFN) According to reports, China has called for the United States to completely eliminate what it describes as the "wrong practice" of "reciprocal tariffs."

On Sunday, the Ministry of Commerce in China urged Washington to return to a more constructive approach in addressing trade disputes, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and balanced dialogue.

This statement follows the US government's recent memorandum that exempts certain products, including computers, smartphones, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, and integrated circuits, from the "reciprocal tariffs."

The ministry indicated that China is currently evaluating the implications of this decision, characterizing it as a "small step" towards rectifying the US's tariff policies.

The ministry reiterated China's consistent position on economic and trade relations with the US, highlighting that a trade war yields no winners and that protectionist measures are not a sustainable solution.

“We urge the US to face up to the rational voices of the international community and domestic parties, take a big step in correcting its mistakes, completely cancel the wrong practice of ‘reciprocal tariffs,’ and return to the right path of mutual respect and resolving differences through equal dialogue,” the ministry stated.

The trade conflict between China and the U.S. intensified as Beijing's 125% tariffs on American imports officially came into effect early Saturday.

These tariffs were implemented following the Trump administration's increase of tariffs on Chinese goods to 145%. However, Beijing has indicated it will refrain from further tariff hikes, even if the US takes additional actions.

The tariff dispute launched by President Donald Trump has significantly impacted global markets, as he accused China of "abusing" trade practices against the US.

Tensions escalated when Trump announced a 90-day suspension of tariffs on all nations, excluding China.
