Malaysia's Services Inflation Witnesses Increase in First Quarter of 2025

(MENAFN) Official figures released Thursday indicate a sustained increase in Malaysia's services sector inflation. The Services Producer Price Index (SPPI), which tracks changes in prices for domestic service producers, saw a 0.6 percent rise in the first quarter of 2025, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia.

According to the department, the arts, entertainment, and recreation sector saw a notable 6.6 percent jump, largely driven by expansion in various leisure and amusement activities.

The accommodation and food & beverage service activities index also continued its upward trajectory, increasing by 3.6 percent. This rise was attributed to gains in "the restaurants and mobile food service activities and beverage service activities indices."

Several other sectors experienced price increases, including education (1.2 percent), health (0.6 percent), professional services (0.5 percent), and real estate activities (0.1 percent).

Conversely, the transportation sector experienced a 3.1 percent contraction, primarily resulting from lower passenger air transport prices. Likewise, the Information & Communication sector saw a marginal 0.2 percent dip, influenced by reduced costs in wireless telecommunications.

Comparing the first quarter to the last quarter of 2024, the SPPI showed a 0.3 percent increase, matching the growth rate of the preceding quarter.
