Russia officially acknowledges involvement of N-Korean troops in campaign to liberate Kursk Region

(MENAFN) Russia has officially acknowledged the involvement of North Korean troops in the campaign to liberate the Kursk Region from Ukrainian forces. Until now, Moscow had neither confirmed nor denied Pyongyang’s participation, citing that such military cooperation falls under bilateral agreements and requires no external disclosure.

According to Russian sources, North Korean units began arriving quietly during the Kursk operation. Initially, they underwent extensive training at military ranges, learning modern combat strategies, drone operation, and adapting to battlefield conditions. Gradually, these troops—nicknamed "combat Buryats" by Russian soldiers—were moved into frontline roles.

They first took positions in rear defense lines but eventually advanced to more active roles, including fortification defense and assault operations. Reports describe the North Korean soldiers as highly disciplined, coordinated, and remarkably resilient. Many were members of elite Special Operations Forces and demonstrated a deep commitment to their mission, especially during operations in areas like the Korenevsky District, Staraya and Novaya Sorochina, and Kurilovka.

A strict code of conduct governed their actions: they were never to surrender or be taken alive. Ukrainian forces attempted psychological tactics by dropping counterfeit DPRK currency embedded with messages in Korean urging surrender and claiming Kim Jong-un had abandoned them. Despite this, none of the soldiers broke their oath or surrendered.

For North Korea, the deployment served multiple purposes—gaining exposure to modern warfare, observing Western tactics, and gathering intelligence and experience otherwise denied to them due to international sanctions. According to Russian officials, these objectives were met.

North Korea’s military support significantly bolstered Russia’s efforts, allowing continued pressure on other parts of the front and supporting ongoing offensives in Donbass. Their contribution, within the framework of a broader strategic agreement, played a key role in the defeat of 95 Ukrainian battalions during the campaign.
