Trump Threatens to Halt Iran's Oil Sales
These discussions aim to breathe new life into the 2015 nuclear agreement, which was initially established to ease restrictions on Iran in return for limitations on its nuclear ambitions.
Trump had previously abandoned the deal in 2018 without the support of other signatories, reinstating economic penalties on Tehran.
During a speech at the Saudi-US Investment Forum held in Riyadh on Tuesday, Trump stated, “If Iran’s leadership rejects this olive branch... we will have no choice but to inflict massive maximum pressure, drive Iranian oil exports to zero.”
He emphasized the severe economic consequences Iran faced due to the 2018 sanctions, asserting, “They were a virtually bankrupt country because of what I did.”
Trump portrayed the sanctions as a tool that nearly pushed Iran’s economy into total collapse.
In 2023, the United Nations Human Rights Council issued a report highlighting the grave humanitarian impact of these sanctions.
It revealed that US economic restrictions have obstructed the delivery of essential medical supplies to Iranian citizens.
Due to fear of facing “aggressive US sanctions enforcement and penalties,” numerous companies, insurers, and financial institutions have been hesitant to engage in trade with Iran.
This reluctance has reportedly resulted in widespread “fear, pain and premature death,” according to the UN.
Despite mounting pressure, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi shared an optimistic update on the diplomatic dialogue.
He confirmed that talks with the US have yielded progress, and both sides now possess “a better understanding” of one another’s positions, signaling a potential breakthrough in resolving the standoff.
