Putin declares Kursk Region completely freed from Ukrainians

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the country's military has fully reclaimed the Kursk Region from Ukrainian forces. Speaking in a video message released by the Kremlin on Saturday, Putin said he was briefed on the development by General Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff.

Putin praised the troops involved in what he called a successful defeat of “neo-Nazi groups” that had entered the region during last summer’s incursion. He claimed that the Ukrainian campaign had ended in failure and resulted in heavy losses for Kiev, particularly among its most trained and well-equipped units.

“These losses will significantly impact the situation along the entire front line,” Putin stated, suggesting that the Russian gains in Kursk would facilitate progress in other sectors of the conflict and bring a final resolution closer.

Putin specifically commended the 11th Airborne Assault Brigade, the 30th Rifle Regiment, and the Akhmat Special Forces, who reportedly executed a covert mission behind Ukrainian lines by accessing enemy territory through an underground pipeline near the town of Sudzha. This maneuver, he said, contributed to the collapse of Ukrainian defenses in the area.

General Gerasimov reported that Ukraine suffered over 76,000 casualties and lost more than 7,700 pieces of equipment during the operation, including hundreds of tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, and armored personnel carriers.

He also confirmed that troops from North Korea assisted Russian forces in Kursk, in accordance with a bilateral strategic partnership agreement signed last year. Ukraine initially captured several settlements in the Kursk Region after launching its offensive in August, but Russian forces eventually halted and reversed the advance.

Putin suggested the Ukrainian incursion was intended to distract from Russia’s offensive in the Donbass, but said that tactic had failed. Ukrainian officials previously framed the operation as a means to strengthen their position in any future negotiations.
