Russia mayor announces country`s air defenses reply to drone attack on Moscow
Sobyanin reported that, based on preliminary information, there were no serious injuries or fatalities. Emergency crews have been dispatched to the crash sites, and all necessary measures are being taken. By 2:17 AM, Russian air defense systems had destroyed another ten drones approaching Moscow from various directions, bringing the total number of intercepted UAVs to at least 19. One of the drones crashed near Kashirskoe Highway in the city’s south.
Photos from the scene showed significant damage to a residential high-rise, where a drone struck the top floor, shattering windows and causing damage to a flower shop below. Moscow's major airports—Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo, Vnukovo, and Zhukovsky—temporarily halted operations due to the attacks.
The mayor later confirmed the destruction of two more drones heading towards the city. Emergency teams are continuing to assess and secure the crash sites.
As Russia prepares to mark the 80th anniversary of its victory over Nazi Germany, President Vladimir Putin had ordered a three-day ceasefire in connection with the celebrations. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected the proposal, demanding an unconditional 30-day truce. Zelensky and other Ukrainian officials have issued threats to target Moscow’s military parade on May 9, which will be attended by international dignitaries. Russia has condemned these statements, accusing Ukraine of resorting to terrorist tactics.
