Norway Aims to Expand Trade Ties, Collaboration with China

(MENAFN) Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre stated on Monday that Norway aims to further expand its trade relationship with China and collaborate on significant global challenges, including the governance of artificial intelligence (AI) and climate change.

Speaking to foreign journalists in Oslo, Støre addressed various topics, such as the upcoming 2025 Norwegian parliamentary elections, Arctic matters, relations between Norway and the United States, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and recent tensions between India and Pakistan.

Responding to a question from a news agency, Støre recalled his visit to China in September 2024, noting that he had "the opportunity to talk very openly with the Chinese leadership," and described the discussion as "good, open and low tension."

He recognized that Norway and China hold differing views on security matters, but reaffirmed that "we want to have cooperation with China on trade, on some of the major global political issues ... we need cooperation to move forward."

Regarding AI, Støre admitted that Norway is not a primary global decision-maker but stressed the nation's commitment to encouraging major global powers to act responsibly. "We will continue to tell China and the U.S. that you should find a way to deal with AI and avoid the most negative impacts on climate, on the environment," he asserted.

"And on the broad global issues, we are very much engaging with China and will continue to do so," he concluded.
