Floods in Australia Claim Lives, Displace Thousands
The extraordinary deluge, which authorities have now officially classified as a natural disaster, stemmed from a sluggish zone of low atmospheric pressure.
For some local inhabitants, the volume of rainfall is reportedly the most extreme they’ve experienced in their lifetimes, according to the Commissioner of the State Emergency Services.
More than 2,000 rescue personnel have been deployed across the region, conducting numerous emergency operations—including saving people who had been trapped on rooftops overnight.
"We're far from out of the woods," warned NSW Premier Chris Minns, emphasizing the need for the public to monitor official emergency updates closely as forecasts indicate additional intense rainfall is likely in the days ahead.
Separate search efforts are currently ongoing in the Mid North Coast region to locate individuals who have gone missing in the chaos.
One woman disappeared after her vehicle became submerged in rising floodwaters, while another man failed to return home after being seen near a flooded roadway.
The floods have forced the temporary closure of more than 100 educational institutions, while also cutting off electricity to thousands of homes and commercial properties.
Emergency shelters have been established to provide refuge for those escaping the flood-affected zones.
