North Korea president denounces battleship mishap
The mishap happened in the eastern port town of Chongjin, where a freshly constructed 5,000-ton destroyer was expected to launch, as the warship’s stern (the back part) fell in front of the bow (the front part) of the warship, effecting the ship’s structure negatively and stopping the ship from entirely departing the ship canal.
North Korean president Kim Jong Un, attended the ceremonial event, denounced the mishap as a “criminal act” resulting from “absolute carelessness, irresponsibility and unscientific empiricism,” emphasizing that it was beyond acceptable limits.
The large warship was to be an important addition to North Korea’s marine forces, marking an ambitious step in military shipbuilding. However, the failed launch has now prompted internal criticism at the highest level.
North Korea has recently intensified marine advancement attempts, launching novel military machinery as disputes with local powers intensifies.
