Media reports German e-mobility association declares bankruptcy
Founded 16 years ago, the BEM promotes a shift toward sustainable transport and energy systems based on renewables. Its members collectively generate revenues of $114 billion and employ roughly one million people. The association also maintains a parliamentary advisory board.
The Berlin-Charlottenburg court has reportedly appointed a provisional insolvency administrator to oversee the case. The reasons behind the bankruptcy remain unclear, and board member Markus Emmert declined to comment to Die Welt.
The news comes amid ongoing difficulties in Germany’s automotive sector. In March, Bosch—the world’s largest car parts supplier—announced job cuts due to weak economic conditions, stagnant demand in the auto industry, and rising competition from China. The electric vehicle transition has also lagged behind expectations.
Factory closures and bankruptcies have affected major carmakers in Germany. Earlier this year, Reuters reported that Chinese automakers were considering purchasing Volkswagen plants facing shutdown.
The previous government under Chancellor Olaf Scholz aimed to have 15 million electric cars on the road by 2030. However, as of January 1, only 1.6 million were registered—just 3.3% of all passenger vehicles—after the government ended EV subsidies amid a 2023 budget crisis, causing sales to plummet.
Adding to concerns, the Handelsblatt Research Institute has predicted that Germany may experience its longest economic downturn since World War II, forecasting a third straight year of recession in 2025.
