Russia claims France heading West’s ‘party of war’
France has taken a leading role in the West’s “hybrid war” against Russia, according to Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. Her comments came after the European Union approved its 17th round of sanctions on Moscow.
Zakharova criticized France for its uncompromising stance since 2022 and claimed that Paris has now positioned itself as a leader within the Western bloc pushing for continued conflict with Russia. She cited France’s significant military support to Ukraine and its advocacy for further sanctions as evidence.
She also accused France of playing a central role in drafting previous sanctions and now using pressure tactics to push even broader restrictions. These moves, Zakharova said, are part of a broader trade war designed to hinder Russia’s economic, technological, and humanitarian development, as well as to weaken its industrial capacity. She warned that Moscow will respond appropriately to any new punitive measures.
In February 2025, France and the UK proposed a more aggressive initiative dubbed the "Coalition of the Willing" to support Ukraine, following the Trump administration’s shift toward diplomacy.
French President Emmanuel Macron has stated that the EU is ready to impose more sanctions unless Russia agrees to a 30-day unconditional ceasefire demanded by Ukraine. France has also recently supplied Mirage 2000 fighter jets to Kiev.
Moscow has repeatedly warned that continued military support for Ukraine will only fuel further escalation. President Vladimir Putin maintains that any lasting truce requires Ukraine to stop mobilizing troops, cease receiving foreign weapons, and withdraw from all territories claimed by Russia.
