Expert Warns AI-Powered Deepfakes Set to Blur Reality

(MENAFN) Deepfake videos, though currently displaying noticeable signs of manipulation, are set to become nearly indistinguishable from authentic footage as artificial intelligence (AI) technology advances, an expert told a news agency.

Christian Darkin, who leads creative AI initiatives at UK-based Deep Fusion Films, explained that today’s deepfakes still reveal subtle flaws. “The image breaks up,” he said, and “there’s a slightly less alive look in the eyes” of individuals in these videos, often paired with slightly downgraded image resolution.

Speaking at the GITEX Europe 2025 technology expo in Berlin, Darkin drew on two decades of experience in visual effects for film to describe how AI has revolutionized the industry.

“People have got a very bad opinion of what deepfakes are because they can be used in some really quite awful ways,” he said. “But, if you imagine a stunt person films a scene for a movie, then you want to replace the stunt person’s face with the face of the original actor, well, that's a deepfake -- that’s an ideal way to use that kind of technology.”

He also highlighted how the same tools could recreate historical figures, for example by syncing archival audio recordings to AI-generated visuals.

“The really important thing is to make sure you’re going to be ethical about it, to make sure everybody knows that what you’re doing isn’t real,” he stated.

Darkin emphasized the growing realism of AI-generated videos and recommended the “labeling of AI” for transparency and ethical standards.
