EU Urges Global Response as Russia Attacks Ukraine

(MENAFN) EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated on Monday that Russia has significantly intensified its offensive against Ukraine, carrying out what she described as the "deadliest" strikes to date.

Speaking ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels, Kallas condemned the recent bombings, calling the attacks on the Ukrainian capital “totally appalling.”

Kallas remarked that Moscow's aggression has visibly escalated. “It is clear that Russia has increased its pressure on Ukraine. It is really bombing Ukraine, and we have seen the deadliest attacks,” she asserted. She underscored the urgency of mounting a stronger international response to deter further violence.

The EU, Kallas affirmed, is committed to applying pressure on Russia in hopes of steering the country toward a peaceful resolution. “It is up to us to put the pressure on Russia so that it would also want peace,” she said.

She further noted that “we are ready to do it on the European side, and we are hoping that other international partners will follow suit.”

Although the primary agenda of the council meeting centers on development topics—particularly the consequences of the United States pulling back its development support—Kallas emphasized that Ukraine remains a top concern for EU officials.

In addition to the situation in Ukraine, Kallas outlined a broader scope of the council’s discussions.

These include enhancing the EU’s strategic goals in nearby regions, advocating for civil liberties, defending journalistic independence, and laying the groundwork for the upcoming EU-Africa Summit.

Touching on recent engagements with African counterparts, Kallas said: “There were a lot of exchanges of views, and I think we definitely need to build on that cooperation.”

She also brought attention to ongoing debates surrounding the next Multiannual Financial Framework, underlining the importance of improving the EU’s external strategies.
