Trump Threatens to Shift Funding from Harvard

(MENAFN) On Monday, U.S. Leader Donald Trump escalated his administration’s campaign against Harvard University by suggesting he may divert USD3 billion in federal grants from the Ivy League school to vocational institutions nationwide.

This move marks a heightened effort to penalize Harvard amid ongoing disputes between the administration and the university.

Trump expressed his intentions on Truth Social, writing, "I am considering taking Three Billion Dollars of Grant Money away from a very antisemitic Harvard, and giving it to TRADE SCHOOLS all across our land."

He added, "What a great investment that would be for the USA, and so badly needed," underscoring his belief in the benefits of bolstering technical education.

In another post, Trump criticized Harvard for being "very slow" in releasing lists of international students, which the administration insists are necessary to identify and exclude "radicalized lunatics" from re-entering the U.S.

The university’s delay has become a focal point in the administration’s broader crackdown on institutions perceived as harboring ideological threats.

The administration has already attempted to revoke Harvard's authority to admit foreign students, although that measure has been temporarily halted by a court injunction.

Meanwhile, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has accused the university of "fostering violence, antisemitism, and coordinating with the Chinese Communist Party on its campus," intensifying the federal critique of Harvard’s policies and affiliations.

In a broader clampdown, the Trump administration has frozen USD3 billion in federal assistance and warned of removing Harvard's tax-exempt designation.

These actions have been justified by the administration through allegations related to pro-Palestine demonstrations and inclusion initiatives on campus.

Harvard has pushed back by filing a lawsuit against the administration, asserting that the federal actions infringe upon its First Amendment rights and constitute improper executive meddling in the jurisdiction of the Internal Revenue Service.
