U.S. Senator Presses Trump to Put Sanctions on Russia
"I’ve had enuf of Putin killing innocent ppl. Pres Trump Take action AT LEAST SANCTIONS," Grassley posted on X.
His call followed Trump’s sharp escalation in rhetoric against Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump labeled Putin “absolutely crazy” and warned that an attempt to seize all of Ukraine “will lead to the downfall of Russia.”
Responding to Trump’s statements, the Kremlin on Monday attributed his comments to “emotional overload.” It also emphasized that the launch of peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine represents a "very important achievement," and acknowledged that the U.S. has made “great efforts” in facilitating the talks.
Those negotiations, held in Istanbul on May 16 and brokered by Türkiye, concluded with both parties agreeing to a significant prisoner swap involving 1,000 detainees from each side. They also committed to further discussions aimed at securing a ceasefire.
Just days earlier, Grassley spearheaded a bipartisan Senate resolution denouncing Russia’s “abduction and forcible transfer” of Ukrainian children. The resolution also insisted that these children be returned before any peace deal to end the war is considered.
