US Senator Urges Trump to Sanction Russia
(MENAFN) On Monday, U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley strongly called on Leader Donald Trump to implement penalties against Russia.
Expressing frustration, Grassley wrote on X, "I’ve had enuf of Putin killing innocent ppl. Pres Trump Take action AT LEAST SANCTIONS," urging immediate action in response to ongoing violence.
This statement followed Trump’s heightened criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump labeled Putin as “absolutely crazy” and warned that his ambition to seize complete control over Ukraine “will lead to the downfall of Russia.”
These remarks reflect a growing concern over Russia’s military aggression and its broader geopolitical consequences.
In response, the Kremlin suggested that Trump's comments stemmed from what it described as an “emotional overload.” The Russian government emphasized the initiation of diplomatic discussions between Moscow and Kyiv as a "very important achievement."
It also acknowledged that the United States had made “great efforts” to support the negotiation process.
The diplomatic talks took place in Istanbul on May 16, facilitated by Türkiye.
The discussions resulted in both nations agreeing to a significant prisoner exchange—1,000 individuals from each side—and a commitment to continue negotiations aimed at securing a ceasefire.
Furthermore, Senator Grassley has been active in addressing the humanitarian aspect of the conflict.
Just last week, he led a cross-party coalition of senators in presenting a resolution that denounced Russia’s “abduction and forcible transfer” of Ukrainian children.
The resolution demands that these children be returned to Ukraine before any peace deal to end the war is finalized.
