European Car Market Grows in April
According to statistics published on Tuesday by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, a total of 925,359 new cars were registered during the month.
Among the primary car markets within the European Union, Spain led the way with a 7.1 percent uptick in registrations. Italy followed with a 2.7 percent increase.
Conversely, France and Germany experienced downturns, recording reductions of 5.6 percent and 0.2 percent, respectively.
Electric-powered vehicles continued to play a pivotal role in sustaining market growth. Sales of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) jumped significantly by 34.1 percent year-over-year, totaling 145,341 units and comprising 15.7 percent of all new vehicle sales.
Germany saw a notable 53.5 percent growth in BEV sales, while even steeper increases were observed in Italy and Czechia, with jumps of 108.2 percent and 110.8 percent, respectively.
Hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) also strengthened their standing, representing 34.7 percent of the EU car market in April. Registrations of HEVs surged by 20.8 percent, reaching 320,725 vehicles.
Sales of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) also demonstrated healthy progress, increasing by 31.2 percent to reach a total of 81,554 units.
Meanwhile, vehicles powered by conventional internal combustion engines faced significant setbacks. Registrations of petrol-powered cars dropped by 20.6 percent, reducing their share of the market to 28.3 percent.
Diesel vehicles experienced even steeper declines, plunging by 24.4 percent, and their market share shrank to 9.6 percent in April.
Most EU nations reported double-digit drops in diesel car sales.
