NHS Commits USD14.5B Annually to Diagnose, Treat Diabetes
Figures released Tuesday show a record 166,360 additional adults in England enrolled last year in the NHS’s flagship public health program aimed at reducing the risk of Type 2 diabetes. The initiative supports participants in making crucial lifestyle changes, including weight loss and healthier habits, to delay or prevent the condition.
Since its inception in 2016, the NHS’s Healthier You Program has drawn over 900,000 high-risk individuals seeking to take control of their health.
The NHS warned in a public statement that Type 2 diabetes can severely affect both individuals and their families.
The condition not only places a heavy burden on individuals but also drives widespread health complications. It remains the top cause of preventable sight loss among working-age adults and significantly increases the risk of kidney failure, limb amputations, heart attacks, nerve damage, strokes, and several major cancers.
The NHS cited research from Manchester University, noting that individuals who complete the Healthier You Program reduce their likelihood of developing Type 2 diabetes by 37%. Participants also report an average weight loss of 3.3 kg.
"Alongside the human cost, the NHS in England typically spends around £10.7 billion (some $14.5 billion) a year on identifying and treating diabetes," the statement added.
