Trump Uses Congo Video to Claim South African Farmer Killings

(MENAFN) A still image from a video that United States Leader Donald Trump used as proof of white farmers being killed in South Africa actually originated from footage showing unrest in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), a news agency reported on Friday.

The video clip was not connected to South Africa but instead depicted events in another African nation.

During a White House meeting on Wednesday with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Trump displayed a printed article containing a screengrab from this footage.

The news agency noted that it first published the original video on February 3. The image Trump showed was thus taken out of its original context.

According to the news agency, the footage captured humanitarian workers managing body bags in Goma, a major city in eastern Congo.

The city had been seized by the M23 rebel group amid fierce fighting that occurred in late January. This context differs significantly from the claim Trump made.

The screengrab appeared in a blog post by the conservative publication American Thinker.

The article discussed conflicts occurring in both South Africa and the DRC but failed to provide a caption identifying the image’s true source. This omission contributed to the confusion.

“These are all white farmers that are being buried,” Trump stated while showing the image.

He also claimed, “You have hundreds of people, thousands of people trying to come into our country because they feel they’re going to be killed and their land is going to be confiscated.

And you do have laws that were passed that give you the right to confiscate land.”

These assertions tied the image to a narrative about land seizures in South Africa, despite the video actually showing events in Congo.
