Trump Weighs New Sanctions on Russia Amid Tensions with Putin
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump is considering fresh actions against Russia amid rising tensions with President Vladimir Putin over ongoing attacks in Ukraine and stalled peace talks, according to a media report.
Although new financial sanctions appear unlikely, the administration is looking into alternative strategies to pressure Putin, including backing a 30-day cease-fire proposed by Ukraine—a move Russia has repeatedly rejected, the report stated Monday, citing sources close to Trump.
The report also noted that Trump may ultimately choose not to implement any new sanctions.
On Sunday, Trump acknowledged that sanctions are seriously on the table.
“He’s killing a lot of people,” Trump stated of Putin. “I don’t know what’s wrong with him. What the hell happened to him?”
Sources revealed that Trump’s frustration with the peace process is mounting, with the possibility that he could abandon negotiations entirely if a final effort fails—a sharp turnaround from the leader who once vowed to end the conflict on his first day in office.
“President Trump has been clear he wants to see a negotiated peace deal,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told the media outlet. “President Trump has also smartly kept all options on the table.”
Trump’s tone hardened significantly during his Sunday remarks: “I’ve known him a long time, always gotten along with him, but he’s sending rockets into cities and killing people and I don’t like it at all.”
“We’re in the middle of talking and he’s sending rockets into Kyiv and other cities. I don’t like it at all,” he added.
Last week, Trump spoke with Putin aiming to secure a ceasefire in Ukraine. Following their conversation, both leaders said they agreed to initiate direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia to try to end the conflict, which has now lasted over three years.
