French Parliament Endorses Assisted Dying Bill
The bill, designed to permit and support individuals seeking to use a "lethal substance" upon request, was approved in its initial reading with 305 votes in favor and 199 against.
This legislative proposal is scheduled to be examined by the Senate during the autumn season and is expected to return to the parliament for further consideration in early 2026, according to a French broadcaster.
The measure outlines that individuals seeking to exercise this right must be 18 years of age or older, hold French citizenship, or be legal residents of France.
They must also be “capable of expressing their will freely and with full understanding,” as stated in the text.
Eligibility also depends on the person suffering from “a serious and incurable illness” that is “life-threatening, in an advanced or terminal stage.”
Additionally, the individual must endure "constant physical or psychological suffering related to this illness.”
In a related move, lawmakers also unanimously supported legislation focused on enhancing end-of-life care and palliative medical services.
French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his approval following the vote.
“The National Assembly’s vote on the texts concerning the development of palliative care and assisted dying is an important step. With respect for different sensitivities, doubts, and hopes, the path of fraternity that I had hoped for is gradually opening up,” he shared on X.
