US Suspends Visa Interviews for Social Media Screening
This directive was disclosed through a diplomatic cable accessed by a news agency.
According to the report, Secretary of State Marco Rubio approved the order on Tuesday.
The directive told U.S. consular sections to suspend the expansion of appointment availability for both student and exchange visitor visas.
This pause will remain in effect until additional instructions are provided within the next few days, the publication noted.
The cable clearly outlined the new directive: "Effective immediately, in preparation for an expansion of required social media screening and vetting, consular sections should not add any additional student or exchange visitor (F, M, and J) visa appointment capacity until further guidance is issued."
The news agency also reported that the U.S. State Department did not promptly offer any official statement when asked for clarification.
