Iran’s President Sparks Hope with First Gulf Visit to Oman

(MENAFN) Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian touched down Tuesday in Muscat, marking his inaugural trip to a Gulf nation since taking office last July, as reported by an Omani news agency.

This visit takes place amid rising expectations for a sixth round of indirect talks between Iran and the United States, brokered by Oman.

During his two-day stay, Pezeshkian was welcomed by Sultan Haitham bin Tariq at the Al Alam Palace in Muscat.

An Iranian news agency, confirmed his arrival at Muscat International Airport, noting the agenda includes a bilateral summit at Al Alam Palace and subsequent meetings with senior Omani and Iranian officials.

According to the new agency, the visit aligns with Iran’s strategic efforts to “strengthen ties with neighboring countries and reinforce relations with Muscat.”

On Sunday, Oman’s Royal Court released a statement underscoring the visit’s objective to bolster the long-established friendship between the two nations and expand bilateral cooperation.

This trip represents Pezeshkian’s first journey to Muscat since assuming the presidency, according to a news agency.

Oman has played a key role mediating the indirect nuclear negotiations between Tehran and Washington, aimed at resolving critical disagreements over Iran’s nuclear program. So far, five rounds have occurred, three of which took place in Muscat, with a sixth round expected imminently.

Iran continues to press for the lifting of sanctions in return for limiting certain nuclear activities while asserting its right to pursue peaceful nuclear energy.

In a recent televised address, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated, “I do not expect talks with the US to yield results” and declared, Iran “needs no one’s permission to enrich uranium.”

These developments unfold amid a stalled diplomatic landscape following the US’s 2018 exit from the 2015 nuclear agreement, despite ongoing efforts from both sides to revive the deal under revised terms.
