Lee Jae-myung Dominates Race Ahead of S. Korea's Election Poll

(MENAFN) South Korea’s liberal Democratic Party presidential hopeful, Lee Jae-myung, holds a commanding lead of over 10 percentage points against his main competitor as the June 3 presidential election approaches, according to a Wednesday survey.

Lee secured backing from 48.8 percent of respondents, outpacing Kim Moon-soo, the conservative People Power Party candidate, who attracted 37.7 percent of voter support.

The former civil rights attorney and seasoned politician remains the clear frontrunner in this election, which was triggered following the ousting of ex-President Yoon Suk-yeol, a conservative, after his failed attempt to impose martial law last December.

In the tightly contested 2022 presidential race, Lee narrowly lost to Yoon by just 0.73 percentage points, the smallest margin in recent history.

Lee Jun-seok, representing the minor conservative New Reform Party, claimed 10.7 percent support in the poll.

Early voting for the pivotal presidential by-election is set to begin Thursday and continue over a two-day period.

The survey also reflected public approval ratings for the parties: the Democratic Party scored 47.1 percent, while the People Power Party was supported by 37.0 percent.

This poll was conducted from May 24 to May 27 among 15,008 voters, carrying a margin of error of ±0.8 percentage points at a 95 percent confidence level.
