Lavrov Says Istanbul Could Host Next Round of Ukraine Talks
“In regard to the second round of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, if you ask me, I would again turn to our Turkish friends.
Istanbul is very good,” Lavrov remarked during a shared press briefing following his meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Moscow.
Türkiye previously acted as a mediator for the initial direct discussions between the two nations in over three years, which took place in Istanbul on May 16.
During those talks, both parties agreed to a significant prisoner swap—1,000 individuals from each side—and also committed to continue dialogue toward a ceasefire.
The diplomatic encounter between Lavrov and Fidan occurred on the second day of the Turkish official’s working trip to Moscow.
Fidan had earlier engaged in talks with Vladimir Medinsky, a top Russian official and head of the Russian delegation during the Istanbul discussions, as well as with Russian Leader Vladimir Putin.
Fidan reiterated Türkiye’s willingness to facilitate negotiations and conveyed Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s support for the ongoing diplomatic efforts.
