Israel, Ukraine fight ‘proxy wars’ on behalf of West
Speaking to Sky News on Sunday, Badenoch responded to recent criticism by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who accused the UK, France, and Canada of siding against humanity by urging an end to Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. Dismissing accusations of genocide against Israel, Badenoch argued that the war, which has resulted in the deaths of over 60,000 Palestinians, is justified and aligns with British interests.
“Iran, an enemy of the UK, funds Hamas. Israel is fighting a proxy war on our behalf,” she asserted.
She went on to compare the Ukraine conflict to a similar proxy struggle, stating that Ukraine is also fighting Russia on behalf of Western Europe.
The Russian Embassy in London reacted by reposting a clip of Badenoch’s interview, saying she had finally “called a spade a spade.” The embassy claimed the West has supported the “illegitimate Kiev regime” since 2014, using Ukraine as a tool in a proxy war against Russia. It also blamed the UK government for encouraging Ukraine to reject peace efforts in 2022, which it said worsened the conflict and led to serious consequences for European security.
In March, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio made a similar remark, describing the Ukraine war as a proxy conflict between nuclear powers – with the U.S. backing Ukraine against Russia.
Moscow has consistently labeled the Ukraine war as a Western-orchestrated proxy conflict aimed at undermining Russia, accusing NATO of ignoring its security concerns, particularly around expansion into Eastern Europe and Ukraine’s potential NATO membership.
Russian President Vladimir Putin recently stated that Russia is fighting alone against the collective West in what he described as an “existential war.”
