Jordan’s UN Envoy Secures Seat on International Court
Hmoud secured the necessary majority in both bodies to take over the position left vacant by the resignation of Judge Nawaf Salam. His tenure at the ICJ will run from May 27 until February 5, 2027.
Judge Salam, who previously served as the court’s president, stepped down in January—nearly two years ahead of his term’s scheduled conclusion on February 5. His departure came after he was tasked with forming a new government in Lebanon.
The ICJ's president is chosen internally through a secret ballot among its judges and serves a three-year term.
