Latvia Demands Reform of EU Migration Regulations

(MENAFN) Latvia is actively advocating for a major overhaul of European Union (EU) migration regulations as it grapples with ongoing challenges from unauthorized border entries, Prime Minister Evika Silina announced Tuesday.

Following a cabinet session, Silina revealed that Latvia, in alliance with the Baltic states, Italy, Denmark, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Poland, is pushing for tougher EU policies on migrant returns alongside a potential reassessment of international refugee agreements.

She emphasized that existing conventions fail to adequately address migrants who are not escaping conflict but are instead part of migration being exploited as a political tool.

In response, Latvia has stepped up border monitoring and enacted legislation specifically targeting the misuse of migration — a strategy now being adopted by several other European nations, Silina added.
