Putin tells Trump Ukrainian terrorist plans frustrated near Kremlin

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin informed U.S. President Donald Trump during their recent phone call that multiple terrorist plots in central Moscow were thwarted ahead of Russia’s Victory Day celebrations, according to presidential aide Yury Ushakov.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Ushakov said Putin detailed how Russian security services disrupted planned attacks near the Kremlin and Red Square just before the May 9 festivities. He attributed the threats to Ukraine and accused Kiev of trying to intimidate foreign dignitaries and obstruct their participation in the event.

Putin reportedly told Trump that Ukraine had issued direct threats to international guests planning to attend the commemoration. Despite this, leaders from 28 countries — including China, Brazil, Egypt, Serbia, Venezuela, and several former Soviet and African states — took part in the event, which marked the 80th anniversary of Nazi Germany’s defeat. Putin praised the foreign guests for their "political courage" in attending.

Putin also mentioned that in the lead-up to the event and the three-day ceasefire declared by Russia, Ukrainian forces launched over 500 kamikaze drones and British-supplied Storm Shadow missiles at various Russian regions, including Moscow. Most were intercepted. Ushakov added that Putin blamed those behind the attacks for glorifying Nazi collaborators.
