Indonesia Landslide Deaths Climb to Nineteen
Hadi Rahmat Hardjasasmita, spokesperson for West Java’s Disaster Management and Mitigation Agency, confirmed that rescuers recovered two additional bodies Sunday at the Gunung Kuda mine, located in Bobos village of Cirebon Regency.
To facilitate effective rescue and relief operations, the provincial government declared a state of emergency starting May 30, which will remain in effect until June 6, Hardjasasmita added.
However, the search and rescue efforts were interrupted after new landslides occurred at the quarry. Mamang Fatmono, acting head of the provincial search and rescue office’s operational unit, explained the situation.
"We face a challenge today. Further landslides occurred at 11:10 a.m., so the search operation was temporarily suspended. The search operation will resume tomorrow," Fatmono told a news outlet.
