Australia Weighs WTO Action Against Trump’s Tariffs

(MENAFN) Australia is contemplating whether to dispute the United States at the World Trade Organization (WTO) regarding Leader Donald Trump's steel and aluminum tariffs, according to reports from local media on Monday.

Trump has declared a plan to raise tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to 50 percent, doubling the previous rate, effective from Wednesday.

Australian products currently face a 10 percent baseline tariff, as reported by a local broadcaster, which did not provide further details on Canberra’s intended approach to contest Trump’s recent decision at the WTO.

Premier Anthony Albanese is scheduled to hold talks with Trump on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Canada later this month.

Albanese stated that he will clearly communicate Australia’s stance through a “variety of channels.”

“This is an act of economic self-harm by the United States. It will increase costs for consumers in the United States because it is supplied across the board,” the broadcaster quoted him as saying.

The broadcaster also noted, “What it will do is not create any comparative advantage or disadvantage compared with other countries that export into the United States. It is an inappropriate action by the Trump administration.”
