World Boxing commands sex chromosome examination

(MENAFN)
World Boxing, the international body overseeing amateur boxing, has announced a new rule requiring sex chromosome testing for athletes aiming to compete in the Olympics. The rule, set to take effect on July 1, is intended to ensure safety and fairness in competition for both male and female boxers.

This new regulation follows controversy surrounding Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, whose eligibility to compete in the women’s division at the 2024 Paris Olympics was questioned. World Boxing stated that Khelif, or any athlete, will not be allowed to compete until their genetic sex is confirmed.

The organization explained that individuals with Y chromosome material or certain differences of sexual development (DSD) involving male androgenization will only be allowed to compete in the male category. The testing will include an appeals process and additional reviews for disputed cases.

The decision was approved by World Boxing’s executive board in May due to what it described as “emergency circumstances” and concerns over the physical risks in Olympic-style boxing. National boxing federations will handle the testing and face penalties for non-compliance or false documentation.

Khelif, 25, became a focal point of controversy during the Paris Games after she quickly defeated Italian boxer Angela Carini and went on to win gold. Although Algeria asserts that Khelif is not transgender, she reportedly has XY chromosomes and elevated testosterone levels. She was previously disqualified by the former governing body, the International Boxing Association (IBA), but was later allowed to compete in Paris.

Khelif has denied any wrongdoing and has taken legal action, claiming she was the target of cyber harassment by public figures including Elon Musk and author J.K. Rowling.
