Musk denies NYT drugs allegation

(MENAFN) Elon Musk has publicly denied allegations of drug abuse made in a recent New York Times article, which claimed he heavily used controlled substances during Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Musk dismissed the report, stating, “I am NOT taking drugs! The New York Times was lying their ass off.”

Musk acknowledged having tried prescription ketamine a few years ago to cope with depression, a fact he said he had already disclosed. He emphasized that he hasn't used it since, calling the renewed focus on it "not even news."

The New York Times alleged that Musk used ketamine to such an extent it may have affected his bladder — a known risk from prolonged use. The article also claimed, citing unnamed sources, that Musk consumed ecstasy, psychedelic mushrooms, and regularly carried a box with around 20 different medications, including Adderall.

It remains unclear whether Musk was under the influence of drugs while serving in the Trump administration as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a role aimed at reducing federal bureaucracy. The Times also reported that Musk's behavior during his government tenure included insulting colleagues and making a gesture interpreted by some as a Nazi salute.

Musk announced on Thursday that he would step down from his government role, thanking Trump for the chance to tackle government waste. However, he noted that DOGE would continue operating. Trump later commented that Musk wasn't truly leaving and would remain involved intermittently.

Reports of tension between Musk and administration officials have circulated for months. The NYT previously reported conflicts between Musk and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, as well as Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, over policy disagreements. Musk has also criticized Trump’s recent spending bill, arguing it conflicts with DOGE’s mission by increasing the national deficit.
