Online Shopping in South Korea Climbs 2.5 Percent in April

(MENAFN) Data released Monday by South Korea’s statistical office shows that online shopping in the country climbed modestly in April, fueled by strong consumer demand for food and delivery services.

E-commerce transactions increased by 2.5% year-on-year, reaching 21.69 trillion won (approximately 15.7 billion U.S. dollars) last month.

Notably, the online sales of food and beverages expanded by 9.1%, while purchases of agricultural, livestock, and fishery products surged 13.2%.

Online orders for food delivery, mobile devices, and cultural and leisure services all recorded double-digit growth. Meanwhile, categories such as cosmetics, daily essentials, and travel and transport services saw single-digit increases.

Conversely, sales of footwear, furniture, sports equipment, and computers dipped by single-digit percentages. Online transactions for e-coupon services plunged sharply by 49.1%, reflecting a decline in gifting trends involving items like coffee and cakes through digital coupons.

Mobile shopping via smartphones, tablets, and similar devices rose 4.6% compared to the previous year, totaling 16.79 trillion won (around 12.2 billion U.S. dollars) in April and making up 77.4% of all online purchases.
