Online Shopping in South Korea Climbs 2.5 Percent in April
E-commerce transactions increased by 2.5% year-on-year, reaching 21.69 trillion won (approximately 15.7 billion U.S. dollars) last month.
Notably, the online sales of food and beverages expanded by 9.1%, while purchases of agricultural, livestock, and fishery products surged 13.2%.
Online orders for food delivery, mobile devices, and cultural and leisure services all recorded double-digit growth. Meanwhile, categories such as cosmetics, daily essentials, and travel and transport services saw single-digit increases.
Conversely, sales of footwear, furniture, sports equipment, and computers dipped by single-digit percentages. Online transactions for e-coupon services plunged sharply by 49.1%, reflecting a decline in gifting trends involving items like coffee and cakes through digital coupons.
Mobile shopping via smartphones, tablets, and similar devices rose 4.6% compared to the previous year, totaling 16.79 trillion won (around 12.2 billion U.S. dollars) in April and making up 77.4% of all online purchases.
