Myanmar Extends Ceasefire Amid Earthquake Recovery
This renewed truce, set to begin on June 1, is intended to support rebuilding and humanitarian efforts following a destructive earthquake, while also fostering a sense of national unity and calm.
The earlier ceasefire, which lasted from May 6 to May 31, was initially proclaimed to allow emergency and support services to operate freely after a 7.7-magnitude earthquake on March 28, which claimed the lives of approximately 3,800 people and forced tens of thousands from their homes.
In the statement released Saturday, the military urged ethnic insurgent groups and other armed factions to avoid any actions that could endanger civilian life or disrupt internal order.
These directives include refraining from assaults on transportation infrastructure, non-combatants, law enforcement, and military installations, as well as halting any recruitment efforts or attempts at territorial control.
The military also issued a warning, stating it would take action to defend the population if these rules were violated.
Despite the ceasefire, Myanmar continues to face widespread unrest, particularly in its northern territories, where ethnic military groups remain engaged in hostilities against the ruling junta, which seized authority in a 2021 military takeover.
