Right-wing Nawrocki secures Polish election for presidency
The National Electoral Commission reported that Nawrocki secured 50.89% of the vote, while Trzaskowski received 49.11%. Voter turnout was high at 71.63%, one of the largest in recent years. Nawrocki performed well in rural regions and among older voters, while Trzaskowski found strong support in major urban centers.
Nawrocki, who currently heads the Institute of National Remembrance—a government body focused on historical research and investigations—campaigned on preserving Catholic values, enhancing national sovereignty, and recalibrating Poland’s relationship with the European Union. Last month, he met with U.S. President Donald Trump, who reportedly told him, “You will win,” according to Polish media.
Trzaskowski, representing Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s Civic Coalition, promoted closer ties with the EU, liberal reforms such as easing abortion laws, legalizing civil partnerships for LGBTQ individuals, and strengthening judicial independence.
Both candidates committed to increasing defense spending and maintaining support for Ukraine amid ongoing regional tensions. However, they diverged on NATO expansion—Trzaskowski favored Ukraine’s membership, while Nawrocki opposed it, warning it could entangle NATO in a direct conflict with Russia.
In his final campaign message, Nawrocki said Poland needs a president who will “defend the constitution and our values,” while Trzaskowski emphasized his vision of a “modern European Poland” committed to freedom and rule of law.
Final certified results are expected Monday from the National Electoral Commission.
