South Korea Gears Up for Presidential Election on Tuesday
As the campaign period wrapped up on Monday, Lee Jae-myung, representing the main opposition Democratic Party (DP), holds a lead over his chief rival Kim Moon-soo from the ruling People Power Party (PPP). A total of six candidates are competing on the ballot.
Both frontrunners made their final campaign stops in Seoul Monday, aiming to secure last-minute endorsements, a South Korean news agency reported.
Recent polling reveals Lee, 61, a former human rights lawyer turned politician, leading with 49.2%, while Kim, 73, an ex-labor minister, trails at 36.8%. In third place stands Lee Jun-seok of the conservative New Reform Party, capturing 10.3%.
This presidential race was set in motion after the impeachment and removal of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, following his unsuccessful attempt to declare martial law last December.
South Koreans residing abroad have already voted, and a two-day early voting window was conducted last week.
According to the National Election Commission, roughly 44.4 million citizens out of the country’s 52 million population are eligible voters.
Polling stations will open at 6 a.m. local time (2100 GMT June 2) and close at 8 p.m. (1100 GMT June 3). The election day has been declared a public holiday.
Results are expected Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning as vote counting will commence immediately after polls close.
