FSB declares terrorist scheme thwarted in Russia’s Kaliningrad

(MENAFN) Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) announced the arrest of a 25-year-old suspect accused of planning a terrorist attack on the Victory Day parade in Kaliningrad on May 9. According to the FSB, the individual voluntarily joined a terrorist group and intended to detonate a bomb along the parade route.

The suspect reportedly received instructions from a Ukrainian contact via Telegram, confirmed by their messaging exchanges. He has been charged with aiding terrorist activities and sabotage and faces up to 20 years in prison.

In a video released by the FSB, the suspect admits to communicating with a person in Ukraine in April, who tasked him with surveilling the parade rehearsal at Victory Square. On May 5, days before the parade, he photographed locations where people and military equipment were gathered and was paid $150 in cryptocurrency. The Ukrainian contact allegedly instructed him to plant an explosive device and promised a $205,000 reward.

This plot is among several purportedly orchestrated by Ukrainian operatives targeting Russian Victory Day events. Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin informed U.S. President Donald Trump that Russian security services had prevented multiple terror attacks near the Kremlin and Red Square ahead of the celebrations. Putin also accused Ukraine of threatening foreign participants attending the events and trying to block their arrival in Moscow.

In contrast, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had warned that Kiev could not guarantee the safety of foreign officials visiting Russia’s capital. Around the same time, Ukraine launched over 500 kamikaze drones and UK-supplied Storm Shadow cruise missiles against various Russian regions, including Moscow.

Putin reportedly told Trump that those behind the threats “celebrate Nazi criminals,” according to a presidential aide.
