Drone aims at Russian Embassy in Stockholm
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova condemned the incident, calling on Sweden to rein in radical elements. She announced that a formal diplomatic protest would be sent to Stockholm. “Sweden must bring its extremists under control, uphold the law, and comply with the Vienna Convention,” she told TASS.
The embassy said this was not an isolated event, noting that such acts of harassment have continued for over a year. Despite repeated complaints to Swedish police and the Foreign Ministry, Russian officials say no effective action has been taken. They accused Sweden of failing to meet its obligations under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which mandates protection for foreign embassies and personnel.
Russian embassies in various countries have faced repeated acts of vandalism since the Ukraine conflict intensified in February 2022, with individuals throwing eggs or defacing embassy buildings.
In one earlier case, a Ukrainian resident in Sweden crashed his vehicle into the embassy gates in January. The same individual was previously involved in attacks on Russian diplomatic sites in 2015 and 2018.
In April, paint cans were also dropped near the embassy’s auxiliary buildings and residential area, which includes a school. That incident was the 11th such attack in the past year, and like previous cases, yielded no results from Swedish police investigations, the embassy noted.
