Maja Stark Secures First Triumph at US Women's Open

(MENAFN) Maja Stark captured her inaugural major championship with a two-stroke margin at the US Women's Open, becoming the third player from Sweden to earn the prestigious trophy.

This marked a historic achievement, as she followed in the footsteps of legendary golfer Annika Sorenstam, who last claimed the title for Sweden in 2006.

Stark outplayed top-ranked American Nelly Korda and Japan’s Rio Taneka at the challenging Erin Hills course in Wisconsin.

"This just feels huge," Stark shared following a steady final round of even-par 72, which cemented her overall score at seven under.

She expressed surprise at her own performance, noting, "You always know that it's possible, but there are so many good golfers on this tour. I [didn't] think I would be able to do it this week."

The 25-year-old emphasized her cautious mindset during the tournament. "I just didn't want to get ahead of myself. I thought there's still a lot of golf left to be played and I just felt like people are going to pass me probably, and I just had to stay calm through that," she explained.

Stark admitted she didn’t check the scoreboard until the 17th hole. "I caught a glimpse of it. It was nice," she added.

Beginning the final day with a slim one-shot advantage, Stark quickly widened the gap after carding a birdie on the sixth hole, while her playing partner Julia Lopez Ramirez faltered.

Korda, who started three strokes behind, closed the gap to a single shot by recording two under on the front nine.

Nonetheless, Stark responded decisively with a birdie on the 11th, shortly after Korda dropped a shot on the 13th.

Gaining momentum, Stark added another birdie on the 14th, elevating her to nine under and firmly taking command of the competition.
